Skiathos the island of astonishing beaches

Skiathos is among the most popular islands of Greece and is considered to be the "jewel" of the northwest Aegean Sea. Famous for the golden beaches, the green nature and the vivid atmosphere, Skiathos is a favourite destination for both youth and families. There are more than 60 sandy beaches, some more touristic, that offer water sports and beach bars, some more hidden, that make your chest breath and your mind wanders.

You can go hiking on 25 official hiking paths, visit monasteries, the old castle and learn about its history, discover herbs and forests. (There is a hiking-a guidebook “Hiking in the Aegean Paradise", that we recommend and keep in the house.) The northern side of the island is still full of virgin nature and Mediterrean jungles. In order to enjoy this part you need to rent a car, motorbike or mountain bike, or you like long hiking walks up to 3,5 hours.
The town of Skiathos is lively, with restaurants, cafes, charming shops and a vivid nightlife.

The island has also history and literature to offer: one of the most important Greek novel writers Alexandros Papadiamantis has lived and written here, mostly fiction inspired by his intelligent observations of the life on the island in the 19th century. His most famous novel is "The murderess" - an early feminist drama on the position of women in society. We recommend to visit his house, that also shelters a bookshop with his works and read his novels and short stories while being in Skiathos
At the port little fisher boats leave for daily trips around the island and to the neighbouring island Tsougrias, Skopelos and Alonissos. In the port you can also go sailing or learn scuba diving.
In July and especially in the beginning of August Skiathos lives the life of a vacation spot in high season. We like it more in the rest of the year. The touristic season starts in May and ends in the middle of October. Our house is always open to you - even in autumn, spring or "winter" you find a calm retreat for relaxing or working.

HOW TO GET TO SKIATHOS

per airplane:
The easiest way to get to Skiathos is by plane. There are even direct flights and charters from the UK, Germany, Austria or Italy. Apart from that, there are frequent flights every day from Athens with Aegean Airlines or skyexpress. gr. So you can fly to Athens and book yourself a connection flight. (duration flight Athens-Skiathos 20 min)
per ferry:
Frequent ships and hover crafts are parting from the nearby harbour-towns Volos, Mantoudi and Ag. Konstantinos. To find their schedules you can visit several websites Hellenic seaways. gr, www.ferriesingreece.com,, www.anes.gr or www.alkyon.gr - these are different companies, that are not coordinated with each other, so you would have to look at all of them. Some years there is even a boat from Thessaloniki, but it depends on the year. Don´t be disappointed if you want to book early and don´t find boats - their schedules are announced quite late.. maybe one month before.
(duration 1,5 to 3 h, depends on the boat)
Get to the harbour towns for the ferry to Skiathos:
There are travel busses from Athens and Thessaloniki that drive to the harbour towns, you can find them here https://www.greeka.com/greece-travel/buses/, http://ktelattikis.gr/en/, http://ktelmacedonia.gr/en. The best is to call them and make a reservation and make sure, that the infos on the website are right. The telephone works better with the busses in Greece.
Duration Thessaloniki-Volos 2:10 h, duration Athens-Volos 3:30h (it is recommended to take the bus to Mantoudi or Ag. Kostantinos from Athens)
In high season the cheapest way to get to Skiathos might be a flight to Thessaloniki, take the bus from Thessaloniki to Volos and then the boat from Volos to Skiathos. All in all it takes 2/3 of a day f.ex. from Berlin to Skiathos that way.
